Annual Plan Narrative 2024-2025

SO 1: Generate timely knowledge and analysis

CIVICUS continues our research to generate timely knowledge and analyses on civil society actions in relation to civic and democratic space:

Timely analysis

  • CIVICUS Lens: Providing incisive analysis and commentary from a civil society perspective in response to events around the globe that impact civil society.
  • The CIVICUS Monitor: Providing a trusted source of comparable data through country civic space ratings and violations of the freedoms of association, peaceful assembly, and expression.
  • Quarterly Civic Space Watchlist (based on the CIVICUS Monitor data) released just before key United Nations human rights review as well as country-specific policy briefs and cross-cutting thematic publications for civil society advocacy.

Global annual publications

  • The State of Civil Society Report: An annual report reviewing civil society action in diverse arenas from the local to the global analysing contemporary events and civil society responses.
  • People Power Under Attack Report: An annual report analysing global civic space conditions with emphasis on key regional and thematic trends drawing on CIVICUS Monitor data.

How we will measure progress:

Learning question:
How are our knowledge products contributing to public discussions on civic space?

Proxy indicators:
CIVICUS Monitor Citations
Target: 381 (20% increase from 1st year of strategy)

# of times we produced timely, local, and accessible knowledge*
Target: 150

* We are using our CIVICUS Lens articles as a proxy indicator for this output. Each week CIVICUS meets to decide what pressing issues to address and to link with relevant civil society partners.

* The number of unique media outlets is a proxy indicator for number of times we are shaping public opinion.

The quality of our knowledge products, outreach strategy and close partnership with local groups directly affected by the issues have played a key role in the uptake of our analyses by media and advocacy platforms in a range of contexts, as evidenced by the citations of our work.
