SO 4: Strengthen public discourse on civic space and reinforce civil society narratives
We build public trust, amplify grassroots, and increase public discourse on civic space through:
Building a network of communicators, journalists and citizen journalists among and beyond the membership. They will amplify grassroots narratives to an international level and enable outreach of global CIVICUS and civil society narratives to a wider audience including grassroots communities.
Improving the outreach and usability of our narratives by prioritizing accessibility. CIVICUS will communicate in more languages, especially non-colonial tongues, and visual and simple formats, create content usable by persons with disabilities, and promote engagement to drive actions. We will use innovation, technology, and targeted narratives to engage key general publics beyond active civil society.
Strengthening our media partnerships for influencing discourse with our research and analysis.
Building greater public trust through improved accountability practices such as 90-Day Accountability Challenge, Legitimacy, Transparency and Accountability Platform and Global Accountability Week.
How we will measure progress:
Learning question: In what ways is our public discourse and media reach supporting groups, affected both civic space restrictions and structural forms of discrimination, to create change in local contexts?
Proxy indicators: # of opinion pieces published Target: 25
# of unique media outlets mentioning CIVICUS Target: 1564 (20% increase from 1st year of strategy)
Narrative support in form of investments and freedom to produce and disseminate content in the language, formats and channels that make sense have been highly valued. CIVICUS support includes small grants and accompaniment to produce quality content; support to amplify and disseminate these messages with global audiences; connecting with other storytellers and learning from respective ideas and creative approaches.
