Annual Plan Narrative 2024-2025

SO 3: Contribute towards stronger emergency and sustained support

We support eco-system strengthening through:

  • Working with peers and partners: Fostering intersectional networks that amplify and expand civil society’s relevance and impact. Our current engagements include network support and coordination for AGNA and its Rebuilding for Good Campaign and Consortium for Human Rights and Media Development in Sub-Sahara Africa (CHARM).
  • Funding mechanisms: Accompany and provide solidarity funding and support to activists and organisations at risk through the CIVICUS Solidarity Fund, Crisis Response Fund, and Prevention grants. We also support pro-active civic space strengthening. Examples include WeRISE! and Global Resource Hub partners.
  • Civil society resourcing: Local Leadership Labs is enabling diverse local civil society actors to engage with governments, donors and other key allies.
  • Enabling local civil society to utilise digital technology to amplify agendas promoting inclusive democratic space online and offline through the Digital Democracy Initiative (DDI). We also facilitate spaces for local actors to co-design financial and non-financial mechanisms to amplify agendas promoting inclusive democratic space online and offline through DDI. Digital Resiliency Grants directly support digital action.

Target: 1

Restrictions on civic space are not uniform. They target specific groups mobilizing around causes that are often considered political or threatening to powerful interests. These include human rights, freedom of expression, the rights to Indigenous Peoples and the environment, labour rights, the rights of LGBTQI+ people and women, and sexual and reproductive rights. CIVICUS emerging programmes will support those experiencing restrictions and invest in infrastructure for early Warning monitoring to inform prevention work in these contexts.
