Taiwan
In 2005, the Civil Society Index was implemented in Taiwan by the Centre for International NGO Studies at the National Sun Yat-Sen University, in cooperation with the National Youth Commission of the Executive Yuan, Republic of China. International coordination was provided by CIVICUS. This implementation led to the publication of an analytical country report, presenting the results of the CSI initiative in the country.
Transforming State-Society Relations: The challenge, dilemma and prospect of civil society in Taiwan
During that year, the CSI Shortened Assessment Tool (CSI-SAT) was implemented. The report highlights the positive development of Taiwanese civil society since the arrival of democracy in the late 1980s. It also identified a set of challenges, such as the low involvement of citizens in civil society’s activities and a rather weak level of organization and infrastructure within the sector. CINGOS hopes that the results of the CSI study will be used by civil society, government and other stakeholders to identify and tackle the priority needs of the civic sector in the years to come.
