Fiji

From 2003 to 2006, the Civil Society Index was implemented in Fiji by the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS), with the international coordination of CIVICUS.

This implementation led to the publication of an analytical country report, presenting the results of the CSI initiative in the country.

A Civil Society in Transition: CIVICUS Civil Society Index Report for Fiji

Over that period, the CSI shows that the Fiji civil society has a structure that is moderately strong and there are some signs of strengthening as CSOs begin to forge alliances and joint activities over common areas of interests. In regard to the environment dimension, civil society is moderately autonomous, has fair processes of dialogue with the state, benefits from fair taxation laws and recognised civil liberties. Although there is a strong commitment to assist those in need, corruption remains one of the challenges in the values that civil society experiences.

This however, does not affect its impact which reflects effective participation of civil society in influencing public policies, in responding to social interests, in meeting social needs and in empowering citizens.
