Sierra Leone

From 2004 to 2006, the Civil Society Index was implemented in Sierra Leone by Campaign for Good Governance in collaboration with Christian Aid – Sierra Leone, with the international coordination of CIVICUS. This implementation led to the publication of an analytical country report, presenting the results of the CSI initiative in the country.

A Critical Time for Civil Society in Sierra Leone

The report reflects that civil society has played a strong and influential role in bringing democratic change into the country. The question now arises, whether civil society will be able to maintain such change and practice among themselves. The report also shows how civil society continues to play a role in re-building the country after years of civil war, in particularly with the reintegration of former combatants. However, the sustainability of financial resources has been identified as potential threat to the work of civil society organizations working in Sierra Leone especially since most of their funds come from foreign donors.
