CIVICUS Annual Report 2023-2024

Financials

CIVICUS’s financial resilience has continued to improve through diversification of funders, strengthening of resource mobilisation and improved financial management practices.

In this second year of our strategic plan, we had a decrease in expenditures as we closed out several long-term programmes the year before and began onboarding new projects in the second half of the financial year. CIVICUS’s income from July 2023 to June 2024 amounted to US$9,122,069.

The top three funders were the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs with US$2,888,954, the Ford Foundation with US$2,078,572 and the Denmark Ministry of Foreign Affairs with US$1,587,938. Overall, we had 14 individual funders: six multilateral and bilateral governmental bodies and eight private foundations. Reserves remained steady.

There was progress on the diversification, growth and optimisation of resources with 18 active partnership agreements over the financial year. We have strengthened our alliance with the EU Commission and European Cooperation. Our partnership with the EU Commission was bolstered by four new grants, three of which include new partnerships with consortia.

We are mindful as we secure new resources to maintain a focus on ensuring that these are directed towards filling specific gaps in our strategic objectives and sustaining ongoing areas of work, rather than expanding unplanned initiatives. This approach has been effectively demonstrated in the project proposals we have submitted since October 2023, which have been informed by the priorities outlined in our costed strategic plan.
